Cannibalisation-Led Content Strategy

Half of Primasia’s non-branded search visibility is being spent on Primasia pages competing against each other. Fixing that comes before writing anything new.

Primasia has demand. Over six months the site was served for 5,944 non-branded queries and collected more than half a million impressions. It converted 159 of them into clicks.

That is not a demand problem or an authority problem. It is a positioning problem, and the largest single cause is that Primasia’s pages are competing with each other.

359 non-branded queries return two or more Primasia URLs with a material impression share. Those queries account for 284,066 impressions, or 52% of all non-branded visibility, and they produced 30 clicks between them.

Cannibalisation by topic cluster

Using the topic clusters already configured in SEO Gets, the damage is highly concentrated. “Cannibalised” below means the share of that cluster’s impressions sitting on queries where more than one Primasia URL competes materially.

Trust & Family Office16,5951022.416 1%
Company Secretarial10,730534.435 0%

Two patterns fall straight out of this table and they drive the whole strategy:

  • The four clusters with the worst cannibalisation are four of the five biggest clusters by impressions. HR & Payroll, Accounting & Tax, Visa and China Payroll hold 229,550 impressions between them and return 27 clicks.
  • The four best-performing clusters are the least cannibalised. Fund Admin (position 9.29), SFC Licensing (14.99), Xero (13.40) and Trust & Family Office (22.41) hold 58,666 impressions, 11% of the total, but deliver 45 clicks, 28% of the total. Where Primasia points one page at one topic, it ranks.

This is the core argument for the client: the pattern that produces Primasia’s best results already exists on the site. It is just not applied to the commercial pages that matter most.

2. Fix first: eleven pages that exist twice

Before any editorial judgement is needed, there are eleven pieces of content published at two URLs each, once under /blog/ and once at root level. Both versions rank. They split impressions, links and relevance signals for no benefit.

Resolution rule applied below: keep the URL with the stronger impression-weighted position, unless its impression base is too small to trust, in which case keep the higher-volume URL. 301 the other into it.

Worth flagging to Primasia: in nine of the eleven pairs the root-level URL holds the better average position despite usually having fewer impressions. Whatever the CMS is doing to /blog/ URLs, they are the weaker path. That argues for consolidating this content at root level and treating /blog/ as genuinely editorial, not as a second home for commercial pages.

Two related technical items

  • /?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp is indexed and ranking separately from the homepage. It picked up 3,097 impressions across 242 queries at an average position of 5.1, against the clean homepage’s 4,008 impressions at position 21.9. A tagged URL is outranking the real one. Self-referencing canonicals and parameter handling need checking.
  • Anchor-fragment URLs on the profits tax and Employer’s Return pages are being reported as distinct results. Low impact, but it confirms canonical handling is loose site-wide.

3. Cluster consolidation plan

This is the substance of the strategy. For each affected cluster: one commercial page owns the money terms, supporting content is retargeted to genuinely different intent, and everything else merges. The aim is fewer, stronger URLs, not fewer words.

3.1 HR & Payroll (Hong Kong) — 24 URLs, 86% cannibalised

The single largest opportunity on the site. 95,858 impressions producing 14 clicks. Every head term in this cluster returns four to seven Primasia URLs. On “payroll outsourcing hong kong” alone (11,190 impressions) six Primasia pages compete, at positions 9.6, 18.7, 74.8, 89.3, 91.5 and 72.2.

/blog/payroll-calculation-hong-kong/46425.9KeepCalculation and how-to intent, distinct from both above

Net effect: the cluster goes from 24 competing URLs to four with clearly separated intent. The service page stops splitting “payroll outsourcing hong kong” six ways, and /blog/payroll-software-hong-kong/ gets a clean run at software terms where it already ranks 14.9 to 21.6 and delivers 8 of the site’s 159 clicks.

3.2 Accounting & Tax — 45 URLs, 72% cannibalised

94,397 impressions, 7 clicks. /service/accounting-tax/ is the highest-impression page on the site at 105,851 and sits at position 25.8 because it is fighting up to six of its own siblings on every commercial term. “Outsourced accounting services hong kong” (7,856 impressions) returns seven Primasia URLs.

Net effect: two clear commercial destinations instead of eight, one for in-house accounting and tax, one for outsourced accounting. Fund accounting stops competing with its own parent.

3.3 Accounting software, systems and cloud — 12 URLs, one topic

This is a smaller cluster but the duplication is the most obvious on the site: two “best accounting software” pages, two “accounting system” pages, two “cloud accounting” pages, and five Xero posts.

DestinationActionAbsorbs

Twelve URLs become four. Xero is already the site’s third-best cluster by average position (13.40) on only 2,487 impressions, so tightening it is low risk and should be done early as a proof point.

3.4 Mandatory Provident Fund — worst average position on the site

Position 48.17 across the cluster, 81% cannibalised, 8,884 impressions, 1 click. On “what is mpf” (2,763 impressions) three Primasia pages return at positions 42.0, 58.0 and 82.1. None of them is close to ranking.

3.5 Visa & Immigration — 14 URLs, 88% cannibalised, plus an IA problem

Nine URLs compete materially. “Investment visa hong kong” (2,209 impressions) returns four. Separately, /service/hr-payroll/hk-visa-applications/ is the strongest visa page in the cluster (3,496 impressions, position 16.5) but it is nested under HR & Payroll, while the actual visa service page /service/hong-kong-visa-services/ is almost invisible at 61 impressions.

3.6 China Payroll & HR — 93% cannibalised, zero clicks

The most cannibalised cluster proportionally. 13,816 impressions and no clicks at all. The cause is simple: /service/hr-payroll/ ranks on China payroll terms alongside /service/hr-payroll/china-payroll-service/. On “payroll services china” the child page sits at 26.5 and the parent at 81.2. On “payroll company china”, 25.9 and 75.0.

Action: strip China references from the Hong Kong payroll service page, strip Hong Kong references from the China page, and merge /blog/hr-solution-china/ into /hr-solution-china/. Ten URLs become three.

4. Expansion: where Primasia is genuinely thin

Consolidation reclaims visibility Primasia already has. Expansion is about the areas where the data shows demand arriving and nothing adequate to receive it. These are ranked by opportunity, not by volume alone.

Priority 1 — Hong Kong Incorporation

Largest gap on the site

63,592 non-branded impressions, average position 31.91, only 13% cannibalised. This is not a competition problem, it is a depth problem: 199 queries are being served by essentially one page, /service/company-incorporation/, which carries 80,622 impressions on its own and ranks in the twenties and thirties for everything.

The query set shows almost identical head terms repeating with slight variation, all ranking 22 to 38: company registration service in hong kong (2,149), incorporation service in hong kong (2,107), company registration service provider hong kong (2,103), company formation in hong kong (2,046), company formation service provider hong kong (1,876), company formation hong kong (1,809), company formation service hong kong (1,756), incorporation service hong kong (1,748), register company service in hong kong (1,732), company formation services (1,720), hong kong incorporation services (1,713), company incorporation services hong kong (1,625).

One page cannot hold all of that. Build supporting depth, not more variants of the same page:

  • Cost and pricing: what Hong Kong incorporation actually costs, all-in, with the government fee breakdown
  • Timeline: how long incorporation takes, stage by stage
  • Requirements and documents: directors, shareholders, registered address, company secretary
  • Non-resident and foreign-owned incorporation, which is Primasia’s actual differentiator
  • Hong Kong versus Singapore versus BVI for holding and trading structures
  • Post-incorporation obligations, which links naturally into the accounting, company secretarial and Employer’s Return pages

Priority 2 — Company Secretarial

Cleanest opportunity

10,729 impressions, average position 34.43, five URLs, and zero cannibalisation. Nothing to untangle. This is purely thin content against a topic where Primasia holds a real service. It is the fastest cluster to improve because the only work required is writing.

“Company secretarial services hong kong” sits at position 36.1 on 733 impressions. Build out statutory obligations, significant controllers register, annual return filing, registered office, and what changing company secretary involves.

Priority 3 — Audit

Primasia has no audit service page. Demand is arriving and landing on a blog post at position 33.2 or on the accounting service page at positions above 40: audit firm (1,359 impressions, position 41.1), audit service hong kong (1,012, 50.1), business audit services (908, 60.3). /blog/audit-service-hong-kong/ carries 3,330 impressions across only 19 queries.

Action: create /service/audit/ as a proper commercial page and rebuild the blog post as its supporting statutory-audit explainer, covering annual audit requirements, audit versus review, and what Hong Kong companies must file.

Priority 4 — Hong Kong bank account opening

/blog/a-straightforward-guide-to-opening-a-bank-account-in-hong-kong/ holds 11,363 impressions across 122 queries at an average position of 57.5. That is the fourth-highest impression count of any blog URL on the site and close to the worst position. “Open bank account in hong kong” (836 impressions) sits at 55.5 and “bank account opening hong kong” (804) at 64.1.

This is high-intent, high-volume demand adjacent to incorporation, and Primasia is nowhere. Rebuild the guide properly and connect it to the incorporation journey. It is one of the strongest cross-sell paths available.

Priority 5 — Nominee and alternate director

This topic is already proving itself. /blog/reserve-v-s-alternate-v-s-nominee-director-what-are-the-differences/ is the single best-converting page on the site: 5,669 impressions, 25 clicks, average position 13.5. That is 16% of all non-branded clicks from 1% of impressions.

Meanwhile /blog/nominee-director-service/ sits at position 35.2 on 4,615 impressions, and “nominee director services” (1,761) and “nominee director service” (880) rank at 34.2 and 43.0.

Action: this is proven intent with a proven page. Build a commercial nominee director service page, keep the comparison article as the informational entry point, and interlink them deliberately.

Protect and extend: what is already working

These clusters should not be restructured. They should be resourced.

ClusterAvg posClicksImpressionsApproach

5. Sequencing

Phase 1 — Weeks 1 to 2 · Zero content cost

The eleven duplicate 301s from section 2. Fix the indexed UTM homepage URL and canonical handling. No writing required, so this ships immediately and gives a clean baseline before any editorial work starts.

Phase 2 — Weeks 3 to 6 · The two big clusters

HR & Payroll consolidation (24 URLs to 4) and Accounting & Tax consolidation (45 URLs to 6). These two clusters hold 190,255 impressions and return 21 clicks. Merge content, apply redirects, then rewrite the two surviving commercial pages to fully own their head terms.

Phase 3 — Weeks 7 to 10 · The remaining tangles

Software and cloud cluster (12 to 4), MPF (3 to 2), Visa (9 to 4, including moving visas out from under HR & Payroll), China Payroll (10 to 3). Lower volume individually, but this is where average position is worst and the structural IA errors sit.

Phase 4 — Weeks 11 to 20 · Expansion

New content against the five expansion priorities, in order: Incorporation depth, Company Secretarial, Audit, bank account opening, nominee director. Roughly 18 to 22 new or substantially rebuilt pages. Starting this before Phases 1 to 3 would add new pages into clusters that are already cannibalising themselves.

6. How to measure this

159 clicks over six months is too small a number to steer by. Click-based reporting will read as noise for at least two quarters. Measure the mechanism instead, using the topic clusters already configured in SEO Gets.

MetricWhy it is the right oneTarget
URLs per head queryThe direct measure of cannibalisation. Track the 359 affected queries and count how many Primasia URLs return materiallyBelow 1.5 average by end of Phase 3, from the current 3.2
Impression-weighted position per clusterMoves long before clicks do, and is stable enough to read month to month at this traffic levelHR & Payroll 22.5 to sub-15; Accounting & Tax 20.9 to sub-14; MPF 48.2 to sub-25
Share of cluster impressions on the canonical URLConfirms consolidation actually transferred equity rather than losing itAbove 70% per cluster post-merge
Top-10 query countLeading indicator of clicks. Currently almost nothing sits in the top 10 outside Fund Admin and SFCCount, tracked monthly, not a fixed target
Clicks and CTRThe outcome, but lagging. Expect no meaningful movement until Phase 3 completesReport quarterly, not monthly

Set the expectation with Primasia now: Phases 1 to 3 will likely show flat or slightly reduced total impressions, because consolidation removes duplicate results from SERPs. That is the intended outcome, not a regression. The metric that should improve immediately is average position on head terms.

Recommended tracking setup

  • Add an annotation in SEO Gets on every redirect batch and every merged page, so position movement can be attributed to a specific action rather than guessed at
  • Report against the 14 existing topic clusters rather than page-by-page, since the whole strategy is about cluster ownership
  • Build a content group per consolidated destination so the canonical page’s share of cluster impressions can be read directly
